At the conclusion of the Iraq Debate Academy that took place in Duhok, Kurdistan Autonomous Region, Iraq in December 2009 the tournament featured a final round between American University Iraq Suleymaney on the proposition and University of Kurdistan Hawler on the opposition. This was the first university debating event ever held in Iraq.

The motion was:
THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT DEVELOPED COUNTRIES SHOULD NOT ACCEPT THE MIGRATION OF SKILLED PROFESSIONALS FROM DEVELOPING NATIONS.

The proposition team was: Bayad Jamal Ali, Safa Fudhl, Arevan Kamaran, Enji Issa

The opposition team was: Sara Mustafa, Mohammed Ali, Sayran Ibrahim, Raed Asad Ahmed

The debate was judged by Matt Stannard of the University of Wyoming, Megan Harlow of Bard College, and Jonathan Borock of the New York City Debate Society.

The decision was 2-1 for the University of Kurdistan.

Thanks to Muhammad Ahmad and Iraq Debate for sponsoring the event.

  1. Dear Dr. Snider,

I am Raed Asad Ahmed from Kurdistan University team. Thank you very much for posting this video. This was really useful for us because we didn't have any proper recording of this wonderful event. We still did not receive photos of the final round from those who promised to send it. Anyway, I applaud your energy for doing all this work. I have been following your posts about the world championship in Antalya. I have to say that the motions were great and engaging. We plan to start teaching students in our university what we learnt from you and think of inviting you one day to our city of Hawler once we begin our workshops. We are looking forward to meeting you again soon.

    Raed
